Tract House - Wes Jones

Below are a selection of drawings and models which describe the 'Tract House'. A project completed in 1987 by Los Angeles based Architect Wes Jones. Jones' work is widely published and a vast amount of information is available on his website:http://www.jonespartners.com/ . This project and others by Jones are featured in the seminal Building: Machines  edition of Pamphlet Architecture.

 

  

 

 

 

  

 

The work of Wes Jones explores a highly technological architecture and suggests technology is a means to enhance our engagement with the world. Consider how mechanical and instrumental architectural components might interact with and respond to the animate site conditions you have observed and the dynamic processes of occupation associated with the use of your buildings. How could such an architecture engage with the  processes of change and transformation which characterise your sites?

Neil Denari

Below are a selection of early works by Los Angles based Architect and former Director of SCI-ARC Neil Denari. Peter Salter

Below are some examples of work by British Architect Peter Salter from his book '4+1 Peter Salter Building Projects'. Please go to the library and check it out.On Thursday we talked a lot about how you might start to imagine and describe the material and experiential qualities of your propositions. Consider how his drawings suggest and evoke potential spatial qualities. How might you use appropriate drawing techniques to imagine and develop the phenomenological characteristics of your designs?

Archigram Archive

The Archigram Archival Project presents over 200 drawn projects and texts from the seminal architectural collective Archigram. The site contains the Archigram magazines, projects that the group created together between 1961 and 1974 and some works produced by individual members outside of this period. 

"Archigram are amongst the most seminal, iconoclastic and influential architectural groups of the modern age. They created some of the 20th century's most iconic images and projects, rethought the relationship of technology, society and architecture, predicted and envisioned the information revolution decades before it came to pass, and reinvented a whole mode of architectural education – and therefore produced a seam of architectural thought with truly global impact."

"The extraordinary influence of the mainly unbuilt 1961-1974 architectural group Archigram is internationally acknowledged. Exhibitions of their work have been touring major institutions worldwide since 1992, they were awarded the RIBA Gold Medal in 2002, and they are recognised influences on many of the world's greatest contemporary architects and buildings."

The Agency of Mapping; Speculation, Critique and Invention

James Corner is an American Landscape Architect and theorist. In 1999 he published the essay The Agency of Mapping; Speculation, Critque and Invention in Mappings edited by Denis Cosgrove. The text explores the potential creative capacity of mapping processes.

“As a creative practice, mapping precipitates its most productive effects through a finding that is also a founding; its agency lies in neither reproduction or imposition but rather in uncovering realities previously unseen or unimagined, even across seemingly exhausted grounds. Thus mapping unfolds potential; it re-makes territory over and over again, each time with new and diverse consequences.”

It is an extremely interesting essay and conceptually contextualizes the ambitions of mapping exercises which we will investigate later this term
